 In a brochure about the exhibit, an explanation is given for the presence of gems in and around Due West: “The factors of temperature, pressure, space, chemical elements, and time have been just right in upper Abbeville County in SC USA to leave deep, rich deposits of amethyst and other gems which, over time, have made their way toward the surface.”

Bowie Arts Center's Director, Ruth Burton noted that many residents are unaware of the “rich veins of amethyst, aquamarine, skeletal quartz, garnets,

 and other minerals and gemstones” in this area.

A Must see Event

Four local mines—the Ellis Mine, the Cunningham Farm, the Diamond Hill Mine, and the Ashley Farm—are represented in the exhibit. In addition, John Rhodes Director of SC Wild's Heritage Center in McCormick SC USA, who is a longtime collector of minerals, will offer a display as part of the exhibit. Videos from Bryan Major, “The Crystal Collector,” will be featured.  Teresa Kemp, owner of SC Wild’s Heritage Center of Plantation Quilts in McCormick, will also present a display.

Jamels' Deep Sea Adventure

Below is "Jamel's Deep Sea Adventure", a book I co-authored with Jamel K. Thomas Joyce, when he was 8-years-old. It discusses our family's faith in God, our African / Gullah roots and the conservation methods I was taught as a child. 

We finished out his visit to see me in Atlanta with a trip to the GA Aquarium where we were amazed as he talked to fish and animals. Other guest took photos as the animals and sea creatures came to the windows to communicate with Jamel! 

Congratulations to Jamel!

 He is now going to the Middle School as a 7th grader!

John Rhodes & Jordyn stopped by SC Wild's Heritage Center last week to answer our questions on one of the petrified rocks in the SC Wild's Science Center. 
 








Jordyn told me it was a tree then a rock. A petrified tree sample. I thought it was always a rock. John came and confirmed that jordyn was correct! John played his guitar for us and could really play the "Blues"!

Join us on February 26 at noon, for a presentation on South Carolina’s 371^st Infantry Regiment – the African-American regiment that trained at Camp Jackson, and went on to earn distinguished battlefield honors on the bloody Western Front of World War One. The lecture will last for one hour and is free to attend. You are invited to bring your lunch to enjoy while listening.

Ms. Teresa Kemp, historical author and researcher and “Atlanta’s Quilt Lady” as well as a descendant of 12 soldiers of the 371^st , and Mrs. Sonya Hodges-Grantham, a 371^st descendant who is also a researcher, presenter and the head of the 371st Infantry Association, will talk about the history of South Carolina’s own regiment in the French Army (as the 371^st was made part of a French division), including the Medal of Honor earned by Corporal Freddie Stowers, of Anderson, SC.

The 371^st Infantry Association and the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum are working to preserve the legacy of this unit, and tell their forgotten story of valor to new generations.  Visitors will also get a chance to see the original overseas flag of this unit, on permanent display in the museum.

Find out if  the 371st Colored troops were all Black!
